Before the future rises, the past must be revealed. As the transformation of the future The Ashana takes shape in the heart of Faro, a remarkable journey has already begun—one that leads not forward, but deep into the city's ancient past.

A Hotel Project Built on Layers of Civilization

Located at the junction of Rua Castilho, Rua Rebelo e Silva, and Travessa Marques da Silva, the Riad Ashana project occupies ground that has witnessed over two millennia of continuous human activity. Situated within the bounds of the former Roman city of Ossónoba, the site lies in a zone of high archaeological sensitivity.

Before laying the foundations for luxury, we laid open the soil—and with it, the stories it has kept hidden for centuries.

Discoveries from Below: What the Earth Revealed

Led by archaeologist Marcelo Jerónimo, a meticulous program of 20 archaeological sondagens (test pits) was undertaken across the site. What emerged was nothing short of extraordinary:

  • Roman relics: Pottery fragments including terra sigillata, amphorae, and tegulae (roof tiles) surfaced, bearing witness to Ossónoba’s imperial roots.

  • Medieval industry: In one trench, the base of a furnace believed to be for glass production was unearthed—alongside domestic waste deposits and coinage from Portugal’s First Dynasty.

  • Modern craftsmanship: The remains of 17th–18th-century buildings, complete with Santa Catarina tile floors, stone arches, and even Chinese porcelain, painted a vivid picture of evolving use and refinement.

Each phase—Medieval, Modern, and Contemporary—was revealed in distinct layers, echoing the city’s transformation from fortified stronghold to vibrant cultural center.

Why This Matters: Honoring Faro’s Heritage

This is more than compliance with preservation law. It is a deep commitment to integrating cultural heritage with modern hospitality.

The Ashana will respectfully inhabit the historic character of Faro, with its fusion of influences from centuries past. Some of the archaeological discoveries may even influence interior or interpretive elements of the hotel, connecting guests directly to the story of the space they occupy.

What Comes Next?

While construction proceeds, the archaeological study continues in parallel. Three key zones have been identified for extended excavation, especially those containing:

  • A medieval industrial cluster with kiln and storage vessels.

  • A 17th-century architectural arc in stone.

  • High concentrations of luxury ceramics.

These efforts ensure that nothing of significance is lost and that Faro’s past is preserved, layer by layer.
